Mixed Media Card Backgrounds
Every mixed media project begins with a background. The good news is you don’t need dozens of techniques to create beautiful results.
These are the four backgrounds I return to most often because they’re beginner-friendly, forgiving, and each creates a completely different look.
🌈 Ink Smooshing
One of my favorite mixed media backgrounds because it’s colorful, forgiving, and nearly impossible to mess up. Every background turns out a little differently, making each project unique.

Add Layers to Your Mixed Media Cards
Once the background is finished, it’s time to build the personality of your project.
These are the techniques I use most often to add depth, texture, movement, and visual interest. Each layer is subtle on its own, but together they create the rich, artistic look that makes mixed media so rewarding.
Stenciling
Grounds the design while adding structure and subtle visual interest.

Texture

Finish with a Strong Focal Point
Once the background is complete, it’s time to let your focal point tell the story.
Whether it’s a stamped image, die cuts, flowers, animals, or a vintage portrait, the focal point gives your project purpose and personality while tying all of those thoughtful layers together.
