Playful die cut storytelling ideas that are surprisingly easy to create
Let’s make something charming, imaginative, and just a little magical. ✨
There’s something special about scene cards. They tell tiny stories. They create little worlds. And somehow, they always feel extra meaningful to the person receiving them.
One of my favorite cardmaking themes has always been homes, houses, and village scenes. These types of cards feel warm, inviting, and wonderfully nostalgic—like a cozy storybook brought to life with paper and ink.

The Whimsical Village Collection by the incredibly talented Vicky Papaioannou is destined to become a classic because its dreamy, imaginative elements swap traditional straight lines for playful curves and delightfully exaggerated shapes that seem to exist only in our imagination.
The buildings lean.
The roofs curve.
The chimneys tilt.
And somehow… it all works beautifully.
In one word?
Charming.

🎨 Thoughts on Color
For this card, I wanted a bold, saturated color palette that would immediately grab the viewer’s eye.
So I used a color scheme that combines:
- Analogous colors (soft blue sky + yellow + green houses)
- with a dramatic complementary pop of red
The result?
👉 Harmony and contrast.
The blue sky creates softness and calm, while the red center house becomes an instant focal point that energizes the entire design.

My village includes:
- yellow house
- green house
- bold red house
- neutral gray roofs and accents
This combination feels playful, artistic, and wonderfully storybook-inspired.
I used my favorite Spellbinders Color Wheel Cardstock—one of my most faithful cardmaking staples.

🧩 Notes on Assembly
To keep the focus on the whimsical village, I used a soft neutral foreground that doesn’t compete with the scene.
I assembled the houses with foam squares to create dimension and depth, then adhered everything onto a soft blue background panel before attaching it to a larger white card base.
The little accessory elements truly make the card feel alive.
And the white frame?
✨ Such an easy trick for giving your card a polished, professional finish.
