After years of cardmaking, I’ve finally narrowed down my list of go-to die-cutting staples—the tools and supplies I not only keep, but reach for again and again.
If you love die-cut cards as much as I do, you know they have a special kind of impact. They’re dimensional, visually interesting, and often become keepsake cards for the recipient.
These are the products that help me create those “wow” cards—reliably and consistently.

This post is part of my Die Cutting Series where I share tools, tips, and card ideas to help you create beautiful die-cut cards.

The Everyday City card shown here is one of my favorite recent projects—you can see the full tutorial here.

✂️ Karen’s 11 Best Die-Cutting Staples
These are the tools that form the foundation of my die-cutting workflow.
1. Platinum 6 Die Cutting Machine

A reliable die-cutting machine is essential—and this is my workhorse. I use my Platinum 6 almost every day. It’s durable, smooth, and consistently delivers clean cuts.
I also use the Scout for smaller dies or crafting on the go.
2. High-Quality Cardstock (ColorWheel)

Cardstock is the foundation of every card. With 48 curated colors, ColorWheel makes it easy to find the perfect shade—and everything coordinates beautifully.
3. Infinity Nesting Dies

These are some of the most versatile dies in my collection.
They:
- create perfect mats (no measuring!)
- cut windows on projects (like shown above)
- add layers and dimension
- can be used as frames or focal elements
These are true “2-for-1” tools—you can create mats, windows, frames, borders, and focal points all from one set. I use them on almost every card.

I’ll be linking to some of my most-used sets in this post. I’ll also link to a card using each die.

4. Large Die of the Month Subscription

My favorite subscription kit: Spellbinders Large Die of the Month. It keeps my cardmaking fresh with curated designs and new ideas each month—and the value is excellent.

5. Frame Dies

Frame dies instantly elevate a design by drawing the eye to your focal point. They add structure, dimension, and a polished finish with minimal effort.
The Open Lace Frame die is such a beautiful frame on my botanical Sympathy card.
This reminds me of some of my earlier Altenew floral cards.
6. Sentiment Dies

A great sentiment can complete a card instantly. I love having a few go-to options ready to use—they save time and elevate the finished design.

7. Craft Stax Organizers

These are a game-changer for keeping projects organized mid-process. I use the medium size most often when working with multiple die-cut pieces.
Like lemons? These components were made into my Lovely Lemons card.
8. Magnetic Sheets & Storage Envelopes

Keeping dies organized is essential. Magnetic sheets keep everything in place, and labeled envelopes make it easy to find what I need.
Two Sizes:
9. Low-Tack Craft Tape
Simple but essential—this keeps dies securely in place while cutting and prevents shifting. I am partial to Best Ever Craft Tape.
10. Precision Glue (Bearly Art Glue)
The fine-tip nozzle makes it easy to adhere even the smallest die cuts cleanly and neatly.
11. Embellishment & Detail Tools (Foam Squares)
Adding dimension with foam squares or craft foam is one of the easiest ways to make a card stand out.
