Quick and Easy BetterPress Notecards | Spellbinders

BetterPress Tutorial detailing how to create easy and elegant letterpress notecards using Spellbinders Florals Through the Year Collection.

Nothing says thoughtful elegance like a handcrafted notecard. I really enjoy the letterpress process and I wanted to create some notecards to have on hand for the coming year. Spellbinders recently released their Florals Through the Year Collection and I think it is quite beautiful. There are 12 plates…one for each month.

I have a detailed tutorial below.

A Year in Bloom

BetterPress takes the art of letterpress and makes it accessible for all. Its crisp impressions and sophisticated designs bring timeless beauty to your cards. Plus, the ease of use means you can create a dozen cards in a single sitting—perfect for stocking up or gifting!

Better Press Tutorial:

  • I started by using Best Ever Craft Tape to attach my BetterPress card panel to the top plate of my BetterPress System.
  • I tried several types of paper (BetterPress, Watercolor and Cardstock) and they all worked with the BetterPress. I liked cottony paper the best. My preferred paper would be the BetterPress cotton paper or a handmade watercolor paper. 
  • The magnetic lower plate works really well to hold the BetterPress impressing plate in place. 
  • I was careful to ink the impressing plate really well. I did a “Tap and Twist” technique where I tapped the ink on the plate and then twisted the ink pad a few degrees. Don’t smash and smoosh or you will wind up with little pieces of ink pad on your plate and project. I ink well because I only like to roll through the press once for each panel.
  • For smaller sentiment plates, I tapped but didn’t twist. When I twisted smaller plates they tended to move out of alignment. If the plate moves it is easy to reposition with a pair of tweezers.
  • Roll your sandwich slowly through the die cutting machine. I think “Super Slo-Mo” while doing this to help me remember to go VERY slowly. 
  • You will want a good stamp cleaner for the BetterPress and plates. I’ve used Hero Arts Ultra Clean for years and it works great.
  • Waterproof or Hybrid inks well. I used the specially formulated BetterPress Inks. Pigment ink is not recommended. You want a faster drying ink. 
  • I found that my guillotine paper trimmer worked better than my Fiskar’s SureCut on cotton paper.

Celebrate | How to Get the Best Prints with Your BetterPress | Spellbinders

Creating fresh clean BetterPress cards for any celebration using Number and Sentiment press plates.

I adore the BetterPress Letterpress system! You can create beautiful, high-quality cards that blend modern design elements with traditional techniques. In this guide, I’ll show you how to use your BetterPress system to make colorful clean and simple cards that feel sophisticated and timeless. Today, I will be using Spellbinders new Color Mix Collection which is great for just about any celebration!

How to Get The Best BetterPress Letter Press Prints

After Experimenting for the past year, here are my tips for pristine BetterPress prints:

  • I started by using Best Ever Craft Tape to attach my BetterPress A2 Porcelain card panel to the BetterPress top plate. I wanted a clean white look, so I used the Porcelain cardstock. In my opinion, BetterPress Cotton Paper or handmade watercolor papers work the best with BetterPress.
  • The magnetic lower plate works really well to hold my Bold Color Mix Numbers and Sweeping Celebrations Sentiments impressing plates in place. 
  • I was careful to ink the impressing plates really well. I did a “Tap and Twist” technique where I tapped the ink on the plate and then twisted the ink pad a few degrees. Don’t smash and smoosh or you will wind up with little pieces of ink pad on your plate and project. I ink well because I prefer to roll through the press only once for each plate.
  • I liked the sentiment going “uphill” with the “h” and “b” lower than the “y”.
  • I rolled my sandwich SLOWLY through my Platinum 6 die cutting machine. I think “Super Slo-Mo” while doing this to help me remember to go VERY slowly. 
  • The Color Mix Numbers Bundle has coordinating dies that are just beautiful! You can use them with the press plates…or separately.
  • You’ll want a good stamp cleaner to clean your BetterPress and press plates. I’ve used Ultra Clean by Hero Arts and it works great!
  • I used the specially formulated BetterPress Inks for my pressing.  For the “54” card I used Coastal and Clay from the Desert Sun Mini Sampler. For my Happy Anniversary card, I used Wild Berry and French Blue from the Nature Tones Mini Sampler. The black comes in a Full Size and you can find the smaller size in the Regal Tones Mini Ink Set. Waterproof or Hybrid inks as work well. Pigment ink is not recommended….you want a faster drying ink. 
  • I found that my guillotine paper trimmer worked better than my Fiskar’s SureCut on cotton paper.
  • My base is Granite cardstock and I used Craft Foam, Bearly Glue and Fashion Jet Enamel Dots to finish my cards.

Hero Arts | Letterpress Birthday Card

Using regular paper and inks for a masculine Hero Arts letter press birthday card.

I make a LOT of cards, but I never seem to have enough masculine cards, so…..here is a wonderful one suitable for anyone! I love the classic look of letter press and was pleased to see Hero Arts new Letter Press/Foil Plates. For this card I used their new Happy Birthday plate.

I did not use special paper or inks but I still think I got a good result on my card. Next, I want to try the birthday plates with my foiling machine.

3 Square BetterPress letter press Sympathy Cards featuring Hero Arts Antique Bee and Wreath.

I fell in love with Hero Arts Antique Bee LetterPress set. I find the plates to be both elegant and whimsical and thought they would make lovely sympathy cards. I used the gorgeous camel watercolor paper that came in my January MMH Classic kit but Hero Arts Handmade Watercolor Paper would be beautiful too. I stamped on my Message Strips Sentiment in coordinating ink. I trimmed my panel down with the pretty Square Scallop Infinity Die and popped onto a card base made from Cup O’ Joe cardstock.

I think letter press gives such a high-end result. On my first card I used Moss ink for my wreath.

Spellbinders | Using Rainbow Colored Ink with Spellbinders BetterPress System

Using Rainbow Colored ink on Spellbinders Mirrored Arch BetterPress plates.

Rainbow Colors + BetterPress

I am still in love with my BetterPress System! For my first card, I decided to create a rainbow effect with Spellbinders new plates called Mirrored Arch Nested Sprigs. They are from the Mirrored Arch Collection.

I used Mulberry and Cosmic Sky inks from The Regal Tones Ink set, Apricot from the Desert set and French Blue, Wild Berry and Saffron from Nature Tones. I didn’t have a green so I used Mowed Lawn Distress Ink and it worked just fine.

The Mirrored Arch Nested Sprigs has one main plate plus three frames that you can use to mix and match. I used all four plates for my card. I inked the plates with all my rainbow colors and ran through my BetterPress machine just once. This ensured there was no shifting. I used Porcelain Better Press paper.

Combining BetterPress with Embossing Folders

Spellbinders just introduced an elegant new line called CopperPlate. I love the simplicity of this line and I combined the Hello with a beautiful Emboss and Cut Folder that has two patterns plus an edge cutting die.

For my BetterPress panel, I used Coastal Blue from the Desert Ink set on Porcelain Cardstock.

I embossed two panels with the Luxe Backdrop and Border folder as I wanted to layer them so I had a second edge peeking out of the bottom. I then cut both panels with the coordinating die. I added some craft foam for added dimension.

Spellbinders | Every Occasion Floral Alphabet | BetterPress Letter Press Cards

BetterPress Letterpress monogram K thank you notes in various shades of blue.

Spellbinders just released the lovely Every Occasion Floral Alphabet and I had so much fun handcrafting a pile of cards. Each kit comes with the floral uppercase letter + a separate corresponding sentiment. You can buy the complete alphabet or individual letters.

It’s my birthday today and I wanted to create some elegant thank you notes. I love the beauty and texture of letterpress so I used the Floral K to make a set of monogrammed cards in various shades of blue. The K also comes with a sentiment, You Are So Kind, but I did not use it on my cards.

I inked the plates well and rolled just one time through my BetterPress Machine for a nice crisp impression.

Versatile “For You” Card

Spellbinders Every Occasion Floral Alphabet F For You BetterPress letterpress card.

I love how versatile the “F For You” plates are so I pressed Clay ink onto creamy Bisque cardstock panel. In person, the ink is a beautiful copper color. I used the December 2022 Die of the Month Kit for the background. The mat is from PaperTrey’s Perfect Match cardstock sampler.

I like to keep Sympathy cards on hand and the “W With Sympathy” plates are so elegant. I used Mulberry Ink on Bisque panels and added Crystal Gems to some of the flower centers.

Best Supplies for BetterPress Letterpress Projects

BetterPress letterpress Spring Bunnies in French Blue Ink.

I love classic letterpress elegance and think this single color Easter card evokes the vintage craftsmanship of years gone by. I used Simon Hurley’s new Spring Bunnies press plates for this card. The bundle includes 12 adorable press plates with corresponding dies. 

The key to letterpress is using a thick cottony paper and Spellbinders’s cotton cardstock panels work really well. I used Spellbinders BetterPress system in conjunction with their Platinum 6 machine. My ink is the lovely French Blue from the Nature Tones Set. I matted my card with a corresponding color of cardstock from PaperTrey’s Perfect Match cardstock.

BetterPress A Friend Like you card two ways.

I adore the timeless elegance of BetterPress letter press cards. Today I wanted to share two cards using the press plate – A Friend Like You. One card is pure letter press….no coloring or embellishment. The second card is loosely colored with Zig Watercolor Brush Markers. I love them both!

A Friend Like You – Pressed Posey Collection

My Process:

  • I taped a Porcelain cotton card panel to the top plate, inked my press plates (flower and sentiments are both included in the A Friend Like You press plate set) with Black BetterPress ink and ran the sandwich through my BetterPress system. 
  • For my watercolor card, I repeated step one using watercolor paper.
  • I cleaned the press plate and BetterPress platform with Ultra Clean.
  • I taped my watercolor panel to a hardboard with painters tape.
  • Using Zig markers, I applied watercolor along the etched lines and then used a water brush to move the color around. I did wet-on-dry painting. I also scribbled some watercolor on my work surface and using my water brush, I added additional color to some areas. I experimented with watercolor brushes and my round water brush and I found that I liked the result with the water brush best. 
  • I let my panel air dry.
  • For the watercolor panel, I made a card base using Stylish Ovals Nesting Dies.
  • I also used Stylish Ovals to cut down my watercolor panel.
  • For the black and white panel I die cut my letter press panel with Essential Rectangles, which unfortunately is retired. I matted with black and glued to an A2 top folding card base.
  • Zig Colors Used: cobalt, light blue, bright yellow, orange, yellow green, mid green, mustard, cool gray, light gray.

Sealed Cord and Faux Seal Sentiments (BP-107)
Spellbinders Sealed Cord and Faux Seal Sentiments (BP-107) handmade card with a gold wax seal.

I wanted to make a traditional masculine card and I love how this one turned out. Minimalist yet elegant. The Sealed Cord press plates have 6 great sentiments, but I wanted to top my card with a wax seal. I used one of the included circular sentiments on a card that you can see HERE.

I love making and using wax seals. I have a blog post titled 18 Tips and Tricks For Making Wax Seals that you can read HERE. I used the wax beads and seal that were included in Spellbinders Wax Seal Starter Kit. I used a Posca Paint pen to highlight the sentiment. I haven’t tried it, but I think a Sharpie would also work.

9 Tips, Tricks and Insights for Spellbinders BetterPress Letter Press Machine System.

Hello! I am so excited about my new BetterPress Letter Press machine! I had a very crafty Christmas and received a BetterPress Letter Press System, Wax Seal Starter Kit and a new Platinum 6 die cutting machine. Today I want to share two cards I made with the BetterPress. I feel like I am gushing, but I LOVE the look and results I achieved with my new toy. I adore the lovely elegant high-end stationary look. You get an engraved like impression combined with ink stamping. 

I wanted to share a few of my insights:
